The Permanent Representative of Italy to the Conference on Disarmament

Ambassador Leonardo Bencini

Leonardo Bencini joined the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1993. Throughout his career, he has served in Rio de Janeiro, Oslo, Moscow, and St. Petersburg. On multiple occasions, he has been involved in issues related to the United Nations, ranging from human rights to peacekeeping, UN reform to sustainable development, and the 2030 Agenda. Most recently (2019-2022), he directed Italy’s contribution to the international response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to Italian, he is fluent in English, French, Portuguese, and Russian. He is an Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (OMRI). Currently, he serves as the Permanent Representative of Italy to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. He was the President of the ninth Review Conference of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), held in Geneva from November 28 to December 16, 2022.

He is married and has a daughter.
