Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in Geneva, delivered a statement during the interactive dialogue with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Children and Armed Conflict, Virginia Gamba, within the framework of the 46th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Ambassador Cornado, expressed concern about the serious violations of the fundamental rights of children affected by armed conflict that continue to be perpetrated in many countries around the world and he called on all parties to a conflict to continue to address and prevent such crimes.
In particular, Ambassador Cornado stressed how impediments to access to education expose children to violence, exploitation and abuse – further exacerbated by the spread of COVID-19 – and called for respecting the relevant principles of international humanitarian law contained in the Geneva Conventions and in the Safe Schools Declaration.
Finally, Ambassador Cornado reiterated Italy’s full support for the mandate of the Special Representative, especially in promoting and implementing the norms of international law and ensuring the effective protection of children affected by armed conflict.
