The Urban Resilience Week, organized by UNECE, takes place in Geneva from October 2nd to 6th and includes two main events: the Third Mayors’ Forum and the 84th Meeting of the Committee for Urban Development, Housing, and Land Management.
The event brings together numerous Mayors and Deputy Mayors from UNECE region and from Asia, Africa and Latin America, and stands as one of the flagship events of the UN Organisation. As in previous editions, Italy is represented by municipalities at the forefront of the so-called “city diplomacy,” a role our country has pioneered since the time of Mayor Giorgio La Pira.
Rome’s Housing Policy Councillor, Tobia Zevi, spoke on the first day of the Forum, outlining policies supporting urban regeneration and Rome’s candidature for EXPO 2030. Concurrently, the Italian Permanent Representative in Geneva, Ambassador Vincenzo Grassi, moderated a side event titled “Women and Mayors: A gender perspective on urban challenges and projects” as well as the afternoon session of works. The Mayor of Alba, Carlo Bo, also attended the event.
On the sidelines of the event, Ambassador Grassi met with the Mayor of Kharkiv, Igor Terekhov, emphasizing that the reconstruction of Ukraine will be a priority for the Italian G7 Presidency in 2024.
The discussions at the Mayors’ Forum aim to outline a renewed prominence of cities in modern times, recognizing the importance of the urban dimension in multilateralism.
