The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Luigi Maria Vignali, spoke at an event hosted at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on the strategic relevance, in today’s economic landscape, of patents that are essential to the implementation of digital and technological standards (Standard Essential Patents – SEPs).

SEPs are a category of patents that is increasingly in demand on the market, as they enable compliance with standardization requirements driven by the ongoing digital transition. SEPs also facilitate interoperability between devices, including across national borders, and are indispensable for the deployment of cutting-edge technologies such as multiband 5G networks, next-generation 6G, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Together with WIPO Deputy Director General Lisa Jorgenson, Ambassador Vignali highlighted the ongoing cooperation between WIPO and Sisvel, a patent management company founded in Italy and operating worldwide. Going forward, the SEPs managed by Sisvel will be immediately visible and searchable in WIPO’s global patent database, PATENTSCOPE, for the benefit of all stakeholders engaged in innovation processes.

This is the first collaboration between WIPO and private partners in the highly strategic field of standard-essential patents for digital standards. The event, attended by numerous national delegates and intellectual property experts, also featured the participation of Sisvel’s founder, Roberto Dini.
