The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Amb. Gian Lorenzo Cornado, took the floor today during the General Debate on the Annual report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, in the framework of the 51st session of the Human Rights Council.<\/p>\n
Ambassador Cornado firstly congratulated Volker T\u00fcrk for his appointment as the new High Commissioner for Human Rights and confirmed Italy\u2019s full support for the OHCHR, as well as for the Special Procedures, the Treaty Bodies and all other Mechanisms.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday an unprecedented food crisis poses major challenges for human rights and humanitarian situation in many countries around the globe\u201d, Amb. Cornado then stated, affirming that \u201cone of the key tasks of the international community is to work in a coordinated way in order to achieve food security for all\u201d. In particular, he recalled Italy\u2019s contribution to the G7 initiative for a \u201cGlobal Alliance on Food Security\u201d and to the first \u201cMediterranean Ministerial Dialogue on the Food Crisis\u201d organized last June.<\/p>\n
The Permanent Representative of Italy further recognized that this goal has been made even more difficult to achieve following Russia\u2019s unjustified and unprovoked attack on Ukraine, and reiterated Italy\u2019s call on Russia to immediately cease its military actions, withdraw its armed forces and fully respect Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence.<\/p>\n
The Permanent Representative finally reaffirmed Italy\u2019s commitment to the universal abolition of death penalty, ahead of the vote on the United Nations General Assembly\u2019s Resolution on a Moratorium on the use of the death penalty lately this year.<\/p>\n
