The first meeting under the Italian Chairmanship ship of the Support Group of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) took place on September 5, 2023 in the Palais des Nations.<\/p>\n
The session was chaired by\u00a0the Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Vincenzo Grassi,\u00a0who presented\u00a0to the Member States\u00a0the priorities of the Italian\u00a0Chairmanship,\u00a0aiming\u00a0to ensure an active engagement\u00a0on key\u00a0issues in support of\u00a0disaster risk reduction (DRR).<\/p>\n
In particular, Italy will focus on the implementation of the recommendations\u00a0of the Midterm Review of the Sendai Framework,\u00a0which took place\u00a0in May 2023.\u00a0Strengthening\u00a0synergies between the Sendai Framework, the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement on climate change and other multilateral initiatives\u00a0is an issue of great importance for Italy,\u00a0also considering our upcoming G7 Presidency. Moreover, Italy will also work in promoting a growing cross-pillar collaboration within the humanitarian and development community, improving the South-South, North-South and Triangular Cooperation.<\/p>\n
During the\u00a0meeting,\u00a0the Special Representative of the Secretary General, Ms. Mami Mizutori, presented the UNDRR work\u00a0programme\u00a0for\u00a02024-2025, which ensures full\u00a0alignment with\u00a0the\u00a0Sendai Framework priorities, and thanked Italy for taking over the Chairmanship of the Support Group.<\/p>\n
For its part, the Indian G20 Presidency summarized the activities conducted by the recently established working group on DRR, emphasizing the need for tailored funding to prevention in order to minimize losses and strengthen response management capabilities.<\/p>\n
