The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the \u201cHuman Rights Day\u201d issued the following statement:<\/p>\n
\u201cWith the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, on December 10, 1948, the international community equipped itself with a tool of global reach to safeguard everyone\u2019s fundamental rights and freedoms, placing the intangible dignity of the person above any form of discrimination and any legal system.<\/p>\n
The achievement of this goal, a few years after the conclusion of the most violent and bloody conflict in human history, offers food for thought on the commitment that is needed today to ensure effective validity of the Declaration.<\/p>\n
The theme of Human Rights Day 2020 to \u201cRecover Better – Stand Up for Human Rights\u201d very aptly emphasizes the immense challenges that the pandemic has placed in front of us.<\/p>\n
While entire peoples suffer persecution for political, ethnic or religious reasons, the health emergency has generated additional risks of discrimination and forms of marginalization within every society, which tear at the social fabric and contradict fundamental values.<\/p>\n
Protecting human rights must be at the heart of the global response to the pandemic, to prevent it from making the application of the aforementioned rights less permeating, and to ensure that recovery efforts are backed by solid criteria of equality and equity.<\/p>\n
