Minister Di Maio establishes the figure of the Special Envoy for the Human Rights of LGBTIQ+ people

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, has established the figure of the Special Envoy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for the Human Rights of LGBTIQ+ people. To carry out this important role, which places Italy at the forefront internationally for the protection of the rights of LGBTIQ+ people, will be the diplomat Fabrizio Petri, current President of the Interministerial Committee for Human Rights (CIDU), appointed today by the Secretary General of the Farnesina, Amb. Ettore Francesco Sequi.

The Special Envoy will be called to coordinate the action of the Farnesina for the protection and promotion of the rights of LGBTIQ+ persons, and to act with respect to discrimination against LGBTIQ+ persons and communities, also by promoting the wider decriminalization of homosexuality in the world. Homosexuality is unfortunately considered a crime in about seventy countries, some of which provide for the death penalty. On indication of Minister Di Maio, the vulnerability of LGBTIQ+ people will also be adequately taken into account within the programs funded by Italian Cooperation.

Thanks to the appointment of a Special Envoy, who will carry out his function at the international level in connection with other Italian Administrations, the European Union, the United Nations and other multilateral bodies, the Farnesina intends to reaffirm its commitment to the protection and promotion of LGBTIQ+ people's rights, already an integral part of Italy's foreign policy on human rights, focused on the protection of human dignity and full enjoyment of political, civil, economic, social and cultural rights, as well as on the fight against all forms of intolerance and discrimination.
