Human Rights Council. Final adoption of the report of the Universal Periodic Review of Italy.

HRC59 UPR Italia outcome

At its current 59th session, the Human Rights Council plenary session today definitively approved the report of the fourth cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Italy, the examination procedure on the overall human rights situation in each of the UN Member States, based on a peer review mechanism.

Through an Addendum drafted by the Interministerial Committee on Human Rights (Comitato Interministeriale per i Diritti Umani – CIDU) as part of the coordination between all the competent Administrations, Italy accepted 295 of the 340 recommendations made by the 123 States that took part in the review last January.

The delegation, led by the Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in Geneva, Amb. Vincenzo Grassi, and the President of the CIDU, Min. Plen. Giovanni Iannuzzi, confirmed Italy’s strong support for the Human Rights Council and for all UN mechanisms for the promotion and protection of human rights.

On the basis of these recommendations, it also reiterated Italy’s strong commitment to women’s rights, gender equality and the fight against violence against women, as well as to the fight against all forms of discrimination and intolerance, to the rights of persons in vulnerable situations, in particular persons with disabilities, to the right to education, to regular and safe migration and to the fight against human trafficking was reaffirmed.

While emphasising that the protection and promotion of human rights, deeply rooted in the 1948 Constitution, is also an established priority of the country’s foreign policy, the delegation recalled Italy’s candidacy as a member of the Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 mandate.
