Statement by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on the occasion of The International Day of Families

The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has made the following statement:

“The family is the vital nucleus of society. Article 29 of the Italian Constitution expressly recognizes it as a natural society that pre-exists the State and affirms its rights. A place for sharing and imparting values, it marks the relationship between generations and plays a central role in the development of the feelings of the community, as well as representing a central element of its continuity.

The International Day of Families, proclaimed by the UN, references the need to reflect, in depth, on the concrete issues families face, on the measures needed to reduce the gap that leads so many to poverty and exclusion. The first and most effective element of social equilibrium, the family merits supportive policies, being cognizant of the role it also plays in the fundamental aim of bringing about an increase in birth rates.

Great care must be bestowed on the youth, who have the right to carry out their life plans, thus also ensuring the future of the country.

We come from a period that has been tragically marked by the pandemic. Families – who have shown great resilience – have been touched by loss, suffering and the harsh social consequences caused by the inevitable containment measures: this aspect increases the need to devote greater attention to them in order to bring about an effective restart.”
