Statement of Italy in the Interactive Dialogue with the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity at the 47th session of the Human Rights Council

In the context of the current session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Italy took part in the Interactive Dialogue with the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

The Permanent Representative of Italy to the International Organisations in Geneva, Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, stated “Italy’s strong committed to opposing all forms of discrimination, including on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity, and to preventing all forms of violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex persons”.

The promotion and protection of the rights of LGBTI persons are a core priority for Italy’s current mandate in the Human Rights Council, as well as in the UN General Assembly. Italy will also devote specific attention to this issue in the upcoming Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. Ambassador Cornado further outlined Italy’s support to the mandate of the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, also by joining the newly established Group of Friends of the SOGI mandate in Geneva, along with being part of the Equal Rights Coalition and member of the LGBTI Core Group in New York.

“For the protection from violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity it is fundamental to abolish discriminatory laws, policies, and practices, including the criminalisation of consenting same-sex relations”, stated the Permanent Representative of Italy, recognizing the importance to work on education and awareness raising.
