International Women’s Day – Italy’s International Commitment

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Vice-President of the Council and Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani reaffirms Italy’s strong international commitment to the protection and promotion of women’s rights, gender equality and against all forms of discrimination and violence against women.

According to Tajani, “Italy is at the forefront of promoting international initiatives aimed at enhancing the role of women in conflict prevention and resolution, peacekeeping and post-conflict reconstruction, in line with the United Nations Women, Peace and Security Agenda. On this day, I would like to express my particular closeness to the Ukrainian women and girls, who are experiencing every day the drama of a war that does not spare them suffering and abuse; to the Afghan women and girls, in the hope that the progress achieved in the last twenty years relating to the right to education, freedom of movement and participation in the political, economic, social and cultural life We are also concerned about the recent issue of toxic gas poisoning involving over a thousand Iranian female students.”

Through cooperation activities, Italy promotes and supports actions to promote significant political and institutional participation of women and to encourage their role in the economy and in the fight against social inequalities, also in line with the UN 2030 Agenda. Italy is actively participating these days in the work of the 67th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW67) in New York, dedicated this year to innovation and technological change in the digital age, to achieve gender equality.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, President Tajani will have dedicated meetings with two young Nigerians, Christians and victims of the ferocity of Boko Haram, who came to Italy from Nigeria thanks to the association “Help to the Church that Suffers”, with a group of constitutionalists who signed a letter, signed by over 400 university professors, denounces
