The first Preparatory Committee for the 2020 Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) opened in Vienna on 2 May

On 2 May 2017 the first Preparatory Committee for the 2020 Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) opened in Vienna, chaired by Amb. Henk Cor van der Kwast of the Netherlands. Italy is represented by H. E. Ambassador Vinicio Mati, Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament. The meeting started with statements delivered by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan and the Vice-Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Austria and the Netherlands, followed by statements by Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Dr. Lassina Zerbo, Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).

The programme of work of the meeting, set to last for two weeks, includes a general debate and three thematic clusters relating to nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and peaceful uses of nuclear energy. In the framework of the non-proliferation cluster regional issues are also addressed, including the North Korean crisis; the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear programme; and the establishment of a zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East.
