Statement by Amb. Cornado to the High Level panel discussion on the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Convention of Genocide

The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado attended today the High Level panel discussion on the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Convention on the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide, held within the 39th session of the Human Rights Council.

In his speech, Ambassador Cornado reaffirmed the Italian committment to the values of the Convention, stressed the key role that the Human Rights Council can play to prevent human rights violations and abuses, and recalled the mandate of the International Criminal Court, established with the Rome Statute in 1998, as far as the persecution of the crime of genocide is concerned.
