The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, intervened today at the Interactive dialogue with the Commission of Inquiry on Syria, presided by Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, during the 45th Session of the Human Rights Council. He thanked the Commission of Inquiry for its report and expressed strong concern for the ongoing systematic human rights abuses in Syria.
Ambassador Cornado stated that Italy remains deeply concerned by the devastating impact of the conflict in Syria on civilians, and in particular on medical personnel, as well as by the worrying figures regarding missing persons, abductees and people unlawfully detained.
Ambassador Cornado reiterated the call to all parties to fully comply to International Humanitarian Law and he condemned the violence and atrocities committed, underlining the need to fight against impunity and hold accountable all the perpetrators of gross human rights violations. Lastly, while expressing continuous support for the work of the Commission of Inquiry in Syria, he reiterated that accountability is a prerequisite of a sustainable, inclusive and peaceful conclusion to the conflict.
