Statement by President Mattarella on the occasion of The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has issued the following statement:

“The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is a chance to reiterate the absolute rejection of all forms of discrimination and intolerance and, therefore, to reaffirm the centrality of the principle of equality enshrined in the Italian Constitution and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Personal attitudes and sexual orientation cannot be grounds for attacking, mocking and denying the respect due to human dignity because, should this happen, it would threaten the moral values which democratic coexistence is based upon.

Society is enriched by contributions of diversity. Contempt and excluding those considered different from oneself, are a form of violence that generates regression and can lead to unacceptable fanaticisms.

A wound inflicted on a single person offends the freedom of all. Unfortunately, there have been several episodes of both moral and physical violence, which, by affecting the victims, offend the whole of society. Solidarity, respect and inclusion, as demonstrated by the work carried out to combat the pandemic, are powerful vectors of social cohesion and security.”
