The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, intervened today at the Interactive dialogue with the Commission of Inquiry on Syria, presided by Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, during the 47th Session of the Human Rights Council.

Ambassador Cornado highlighted how for over a decade the Syrian people has been enduring a brutal conflict, suffering human rights abuses on a massive and systematic scale and he reaffirmed Italy’s deep concern about by the large number of extrajudicial killings, of missing persons, and of people unlawfully detained. He also urged all parties, but primarily the Syrian authorities, to take all necessary steps to reveal the fate of those who have been forcibly disappeared or that are still missing, engaging meaningfully with all relevant existing mechanisms and in supporting the families of the victims.

Ambassador Cornado underlined the need to fight against impunity and hold accountable all the perpetrators of gross human rights violations. Lastly, while expressing continuous support for the work of the Commission of Inquiry and the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism on Syria, he reiterated that accountability is a prerequisite of a sustainable, inclusive and peaceful conclusion to the conflict.
