On Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 December 2021, the 14th Conference of Italian Ambassadors around the World took place at the Foreign Ministry titled: “Making a new start together: how Italy’s foreign and European policy can contribute to reshaping the International System”.
Speakers included the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, the Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio.
The Conference of Italian Ambassadors is an opportunity to exchange views and discuss issues relating to the international actions by our country, involving the heads of Italian diplomatic missions and the top officials of the Foreign Ministry. The first conference was held in 1998, following the example of similar initiatives in other European and non-European countries, and, since 2004, it has been decided to name the Conference after a specific theme to guide the proceedings.
This year, the Foreign Ministry has once again brought together in Rome about 100 Italian ambassadors around the world: an opportunity for discussion and reflection that may enable this Department of Government – also thanks to its vast diplomatic network – to spearhead security and development initiatives on behalf of the entire country. The Conference focused on the commitment of the Italian diplomatic network in areas such as the geopolitical developments in the World in the wake of the pandemic, the role of women in the diplomatic service, Italy’s contribution to responding to global challenges, and how the Foreign Ministry can enhance Italy’s recovery and worldwide image.
