Hearing of Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado before the Extraordinary Commission on intolerance, racism, anti-Semitism, incitement to hatred and violence

In the framework of the parliamentary survey on the nature, causes and recent developments of the phenomenon of hate speech, today the Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, participated in a hearing conducted by the Extraordinary Commission on intolerance, racism, anti-Semitism, incitement to hatred and violence, of the Italian Senate.

Ambassador Cornado gave the members of the Extraordinary Commission an overview of the activities carried out by the United Nations in Geneva to contrast discrimination, intolerance and incitement to hatred and violence, both in the international protection of human rights and in the humanitarian field. In particular, he focused, among other things, on the main international instruments and mechanisms on the subject, on the bodies responsible for monitoring their implementation and on the role of the Human Rights Council and its Special Procedures. In addition, Ambassador Cornado mentioned the different forms of intolerance and discrimination, further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the recent developments in the UN framework in Geneva on countering hate speech in the internet space.
