Statement of Italy in the Interactive dialogue on the report of the High Commissioner on the situation of human rights in Nicaragua at the 49th session of the Human Rights Council

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Marie Sol Fulci, took the floor today at the Interactive dialogue on the report of the High Commissioner on the situation of human rights in Nicaragua, in the framework of the 49th session of the Human Rights Council.

“Italy expresses its deep concern for the worsening situation in Nicaragua and the widespread violations of human rights”, the Deputy Permanent Representative stated, calling on the Nicaraguan authorities to put an end to the crackdown against political opponents, independent media, universities, NGOs, civil society and human rights defenders, and to uphold human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy reiterated the necessity to restore a national inclusive dialogue through the participation of all sectors of the Nicaraguan society and urged the Nicaraguan Government to immediately and unconditionally release all political prisoners.

She finally encouraged Nicaragua to resume dialogue and cooperation with all the regional and international bodies that promote and protect human rights, highlighting that the OHCHR and the IACHR must be authorised to return to Nicaragua, to monitor the situation.
