ITALIAN DESIGN DAY 2022 – 6th EDITION

With the topic of Ri-Generazione. Design e nuove tecnologie per un futuro sostenibile [Re-generation. Design and new technologies for a sustainable future], the best of Italian design becomes the protagonist in over 100 Countries.

With hundreds of initiatives carried out all over the world, the 6th edition of the Italian Design Day, an event first held in 2017 to promote the best of Italian furniture, architecture, and design abroad, is scheduled for 23 March.

The topic for this year’s edition is Re-Generation. Design and new technologies for a sustainable future, which highlights one of the current challenges faced by design: promoting a transition in lifestyles that combines functionality and well-being with sustainability and environmental impact, re-generating – both in terms of ideas and in practice – objects and spaces. The need to reuse, regenerate, renew, and recycle existing materials and products is nowadays parallel to the need to develop new ones. To reach this goal, it will be even more essential to ensure dialogue and collaboration among designers on the one hand and, on the other, among all partners active on these issues within the socioeconomic context, from manufacturing companies to research and technological development. The goal is to design new products and processes based on sustainable technologies and founded on the concept of circular economy.

Within this framework, the diplomatic-consular network, the Italian Cultural Institutes, and the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) Offices around the world are organizing events, presentations of design objects and projects, contests, and seminars in over 100 Countries. The initiatives, in presence or in hybrid form, will involve over 115 people among the most well-known and qualified Italian designers, architects, researchers, entrepreneurs, and specialist journalists to enhance the value of Italian creativity and reflect on the evolution of design within a dynamic and globalized context, and on the challenges it is called to address; namely, the promotion of an ecological transition in our lifestyles through the contribution provided by technology innovation.

The Director General for the Promotion of the Country System of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Lorenzo Angeloni, said: ”At its 6th edition, the Italian Design Day is one of the most anticipated and appreciated events within the framework of initiatives carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Italy’s integrated promotion. Since 2017, thanks to the commitment of our diplomatic-consular network, of the Italian Cultural Institutes, and of the ITA Offices, the event has taken the best of Italian furniture, design, and architecture in the world to promote the internationalization of a strategic industrial sector through initiatives to support export, businesses in the sector, and tourist attractions in the territories.”

The Director General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture, Onofrio Cutaia, said: “This year, the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity wanted to once again strongly support the Italian Design Day to promote the work and knowledge of our Country’s talents and excellences in a strategic sector such as design, one of the creative expressions most strongly linked to the contemporary world. Institutions must encourage all actions necessary to help this crucial sector for Made in Italy, also at the international level, and support the network of cultural and creative enterprises that work in close cooperation for the growth of this strategic sector, also within the area of digital and green transition.”

The Italian Design Day 2022 is promoted and organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and by the Ministry of Culture, thanks to the contribution made by the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity within the initiatives of beIT and Vivere all’Italiana.

Fondazione ADI Collezione Compasso d’Oro, ADI Associazione per il Disegno Industriale, Italian Trade Agency, Triennale Milano, Salone del Mobile Milano, FederlegnoArredo, and Altagamma Foundation took part in the general organization and communication of the event.
