The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Vincenzo Grassi, took the floor today during the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, in the framework of the 53rd session of the Human Rights Council.

We remain deeply concerned about the deteriorating security, humanitarian, human rights, and political situation in Myanmar”, Ambassador Grassi stated, urging the Myanmar military to cease all violence and attacks against its people, including against ethnic and religious minorities across the country, to release all those arbitrarily detained and discontinue politically motivated prosecutions, and to create an environment for an inclusive and peaceful dialogue.

He then expressed Italy’s support for ASEAN’s efforts and the engagement of the ASEAN’s Special Envoy’s to Myanmar for the implementation of the “Five-Point Consensus”. The need to ensure a full, safe, and unimpeded humanitarian access to all people was also highlighted, along with the safe, sustainable, dignified, and voluntary return of the Rohingya refugees to their places of origin.
