The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Vincenzo Grassi, took the floor today during the Interactive Dialogue with the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, in the framework of the 57th session of the Human Rights Council.
Thanking the Commission of Inquiry for its latest Report, the Permanent Representative stated that “The humanitarian situation in Syria remains dire, as confirmed by the Commission of Inquiry Report, which underlines the ongoing attacks against civilians, arbitrary detention, torture, enforced disappearances and deaths in detention left without investigations”. With regard to this, he reiterated full support to the work of the Independent Institution on Missing Persons (IIMP), also in assisting families in the search of their relatives.
The Ambassador also urged “all parties to respect their obligations under international human rights law and humanitarian law, ensuring the protection of civilians and facilitating the delivery of basic assistance“.
In conclusion, the Permanent Representative reiterated that Italy fully supports the essential work of the Commission of Inquiry and of the International, Impartial, Independent Mechanism (IIIM) and “calls for the resumption of a political process under the auspices of the United Nations to realize the aspirations of the Syrian people and remains ready to fight all forms of impunity“.
