At the 89th session of the Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety, held Sept. 23-27 in Geneva, UNECE Member States unanimously re-elected Dr Ms Luciana Iorio, representative of the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport, as Chair of the Forum.
The Road Safety Forum is a permanent intergovernmental body of the United Nations, tasked with improving road safety and preventing accidents, in line with the goals of the United Nations Second Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021-2030). Its core assignment is the custody and oversight of the United Nations Conventions designed to harmonize traffic rules, road signs, driving licenses, road user behavior, and the characteristics of vehicles and infrastructure.
In this year’s edition, the Forum addressed issues of great relevance to the future of mobility, including the introduction of new rules for the movement of autonomous vehicles, training and information for road users, cooperation to improve safe mobility in low- and middle-income countries, and ethical and liability issues regarding policies for highly automated vehicles.
The re-appointment of Dr. Iorio as Chair of the Forum, which meets twice a year, is further evidence of the leading role Italy plays in implementing road safety policies, both nationally and internationally.
