In the framework of the current session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Italy spoke today in the General Debate focused on “Human Rights bodies and mechanisms”. Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in Geneva, highlighted that, in the last year, pandemic caused increasing challenges for the protection of human rights worldwide, hitting in a harder way the persons belonging to vulnerable or marginalized groups. “In line with the ‘motto’ of our mandate on the Council – ‘Human Rights for Peace’ – we believe that only when human rights are guaranteed to all, leaving no-one behind, societies can really be peaceful and resilient”, he stated. For this reason, with reference to the UN Secretary General’s call “to build back better” after the pandemic, Italy puts human rights and fundamental freedoms at the center of its recovery efforts. The Permanent Representative of Italy also reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to the fight against all forms of discrimination and to the promotion of human rights for all.
