The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Amb. Gian Lorenzo Cornado, met today IOM’s Director General, Amb. William Lacy Swing.
The meeting provided with an opportunity to witness the excellent collaboration between the Organization and Italy. While thanking Director Swing for the leadership, friendship and professionalism demonstrated in ten years of service at IOM, Amb. Cornado touched upon some of the most important issues on the migration agenda and highlighted the relevance of IOM and its fundamental role, e.i. in the sector of assisted voluntary repatriation. With regard to the migration dynamics in Central Mediterranean Sea, Amb. Corando – who cited the recent visit of Minister Moavero Milanesi in Tripoli and the support to Libyan Authorities and Coast Guard – highlighted how the migration phenomenon cannot be considered anymore as an Italian problem, but as European problem as a whole.
Amb. Swing thanked Italy for the role played in recent years and for the excellent cooperation, which is also witnessed by the broad presence of Italian professionals working in IOM.
