The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, presented today his credentials to the Director General of UNOG, Michael Møller.
The meeting, which followed a short ceremony, provided an opportunity for a broad exchange of views on common priorities and future challenges. Ambassador Cornado highlighted the importance that Italy attaches to cooperation with the United Nations, Italy’s commitment in the field of protection and promotion of human rights and underlined Italy’s candidature to the Human Rights Council for 2019-2021. He also cited Italy’s active involvement in the multilateral processes linked to protection of refugees and to the migration agenda, expressing strong support to the mandate of the High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, of the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, and his appreciation for the leadership of outgoing IOM’s Director General, William Lacy Swing.
Director General Møller highlighted the strategic importance of Geneva as a global multilateral hub and efforts made by UNOG to allow better knowledge to the activities carried on by the 24 UN agencies which are in Geneva and their impact on citizens’ everyday life.
