The Permanent Representative of Italy to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, took part today to the International Dialogue on Migration, chaired for the first time by the new Director General of IOM, Antonio Vitorino, at the presene of the Special Representative of the Secretary General for International Migration, Louise Arbour, and Chile’s Ambassador Juan Eduardo Eguiguren, Chair of IOM’s Council.
Ambassador Cornado, in his statement to the first session of the Dialogue, on the topic “Advancing migration governance: global capacity development frameworks and processes”, highlighted the importance of the Global Compact on Migration as an opportunity to build a global partnership and strengthen the principle of shared responsibility in managing international migration flows. In this context, moving from the Italian experience, Ambassador Cornado flagged the role of capacity building activities, also a mean to fight smuggling and illegal migration, together with assistance to the most vulnerable categories of refugees and migrants.
