Gen. Silvio Cau elected at the WMO Executive Council

On the occasion of the 18th Congress of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) elections took place for the governing and political bodies of the organizations. General Silvio Cau, Head of the National Meteorological Service of the Italian Air Force, was elected member of the Executive Council of WMO. This important result was achieved thanks to his competences, to the role of the Italian Meteorological Service and to the coordination efforts made by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Italian Ministry of Defence and by the scientific community.

Italy made part of the Executive Council – which represents the main governing body of WMO and coordinates the Organization’s programmes – without interruption starting from 2007.

The WMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations composed by 193 member States. Its roots date back to the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), founded in Vienna in 1873 with the objective of facilitating information sharing on weather among countries.
