Conclusion of the 18th Conference of Parties of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora

The 18th Conference of Parties of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which saw the participation of 2.200 experts from 180 countries, came to an end today.

The plenary meeting confirmed decisions taken in the scientific committees and in the working groups. Among the most significan decisions, those relating to the protection of different marine species are particularly important. The existing high level of protection for elephants and rhinoceros have been confirmed and a new agreement has been reached on protection of giraffes. Some species of amphibians and reptiles have also been put under the protection of CITES, some of them being present also on the Italian territory. Among the issues that concern Italy the most, the interest in not reducing the levels of protection of the flag species and placing greater emphasis on regulatory aspects were emphasized. The use of rosewood has also been regulated, excluding the trade in musical instruments (of particular interest for Italian manufacturing in the sector). Some species of amphibians and reptiles present in Italy have also been subjected to the CITES discipline.

Finally, procedures for the management of confiscated items were perfectioned (both for animals and plants) and guidelines on the tasks of the Management Authority were adopted, particularly on the verification of legal acquisition of items being sold.
