45th Session of the Human Rights Council – Interactive Dialogue with the Fact-Finding Mission on Libya

The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, intervened today at the Interactive Dialogue with the Fact-Finding Mission on Libya during the 45th Session of the Human Rights Council. He expressed appreciation for the swift appointment of the members of the Mission and congratulated them on their first interactive dialogue with the HRC.

Ambassador Cornado expressed full support to the mandate and highlighted the importance that the Mission will be provided with sufficient and qualified resources to conduct its work in due time, despite the difficulties posed by the current pandemic. He also stressed that “investigate, collect evidences and documenting the grave human rights and international humanitarian law violations that happened and that are still occurring in Libya, including the attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructures, is of utmost importance”.

Therefore, Ambassador Cornado reminded once again the need for full accountability for those responsible of such violations, fighting impunity and restoring justice, and he called on the Fact-Finding Mission to build on the work done so far by other relevant international and national mechanisms, especially in the field of missing or disappeared persons. Lastly, he encouraged the Mission to consider the gender perspective throughout its work.
