Del Re: a multidimensional response to the Covid pandemic at the centre of the G20 Presidency agenda

Vice Minister Del Re participated, in VTC, in the 2nd High Level Meeting of the Facilitation Council of ACT – the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator – convened by the Norwegian Development Minister and the South African Health Minister. The aim of the meeting was to provide an update on the state-of-the-art of the diagnostics, treatment and vaccine, and of the relevant access and fair distribution policies, as well as to launch the discussion on the urgent financial needs and possible further financing procedures. Among the participants at the meeting were Stella Kyriakides, EU Commissioner for Health, and Tedros Adhanom, Director General of WHO.

Speaking at the final session, Vice Minister Del Re illustrated the agenda of the Italian Presidency of the G20, pointing out that it will be fully committed to supporting the fundamental work of the ACT-Accelerator in the coming months and throughout 2021.

“Italy was one of the very first countries to call for this multilateral and multidimensional response to the crisis. We must strengthen international cooperation and ensure universal and fair access, support and delivery for all, with ad hoc tools for the least developed, vulnerable and developing countries” – Ms. Del Re said.

“The multidimensional response to the pandemic, from immediate action to sustainable recovery, will be the main framework of Italy’s G20 Presidency agenda, which we will develop around 3 Pillars: People, Planet and Prosperity. In this context, global health will be at the top of our agenda, a key topic for discussion by the leaders, as well as the other relevant ministerial meetings” – she added.

“Italy’s Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, is aware of the crucial importance of these issues, which is why he also recently announced, in collaboration with the President of the European Commission, the calling of a Global Summit on Health in 2021, based also on the results of the efforts we will be putting into our forthcoming G20 Presidency” – the Vice Minister concluded.
