VM Sereni participates at the Fourth Edition of the Women’s Forum of MED Dialogues 2020

“From the speeches heard during this Forum, which is now four years old, two truly important messages emerge: on the one hand, the need to promote the economic emancipation of women in the context of the pandemic and beyond, and on the other, how to increase the role of women in peace-building”. This was stated by the Deputy Foreign Minister Marina Sereni, closing the work of the Fourth Edition of the Women’s Forum within the Med Dialogue 2020.

“Already in October 2017 – explained Sereni – Italy has launched the Mediterranean Women Mediators Network to significantly promote the participation of women in peace processes, their mediation and peacebuilding efforts in a region, the Mediterranean one, which is essential for global peace and stability. Results have been achieved so far of which we can be proud, but we must be aware that much remains to be done. Let us look, however – continued the Deputy Minister – also at the encouraging signs. I am thinking for example of the important role of Yemeni women in promoting peace in their country, the participation of Libyan women in the Political Dialogue Forum and the establishment, in July 2019, of the Network of Women Mediators of the Arab League. I would also like to mention the now upcoming Italian Presidency of the G20. People, Planet and Prosperity are the three pillars that will define our agenda, each of these issues should include women’s empowerment”.

“Women can be powerful agents of positive change. It was the iconic image of a woman, for example, that drew the eyes of the world to last year’s Sudan revolution: a young woman dressed in white, standing on top of a car in front of a group of protesters who gathered around her. We continue to work together – concluded Sereni – for our common goals”.
