The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Vincenzo Grassi, took the floor today during the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Adviser of the UN Secretary General on the Prevention of Genocide, in the framework of the 53rd session of the Human Rights Council.
“Based on its longstanding commitment to the prevention of genocide and other atrocity crimes, Italy reiterates its strong support for the UN Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, which plays a key role to provide early warning and identify risk factors”, stated the Permanent Representative. He added that “75 years after the adoption of the Convention on Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, atrocity crimes remain an enduring challenge and therefore strengthened efforts are required to address their root causes and enhance the synergies within the UN system, taking into account the connections between peace, human rights and sustainable development”.
Ambassador Grassi stated further that “it is also crucial to increase the involvement of women in these efforts, in line with the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and its goal to promote the participation of women in conflict prevention and peace processes”. In this spirit, underlined the Permanent Representative, “already in 2017 Italy promoted the establishment of the Mediterranean Women Mediator’s Network and last June co-hosted and endorsed the launch by the Office of the Special Adviser of the “Napoli Women in Communities Plan of Action”, aimed at ensuring that women contribute to countering hate speech and preventing incitement to violence that could lead to atrocity crimes”.
