Statement of Italy during the Interactive Dialogue with the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, in the framework of the 55th session of the Human Rights Council.

UN Ginevra

The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Vincenzo Grassi, took the floor today during the Interactive Dialogue with the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, in the framework of the 55th session of the Human Rights Council.

Thanking the Commission of Inquiry for its report, relating to all areas of Syria, the Permanent Representative stated that “Thirteen years into the conflict, the situation in Syria remains dire, and the report confirms attacks against civilians and civilian objects, arbitrary detention, torture, enforced disappearances and deaths in detention left without investigations”.

The Ambassador urged “all parties to respect their obligations under international human rights law and humanitarian law, ensuring the protection of civilians and facilitating the provision of humanitarian assistance“, also expressing concern about the absence of conditions for the return of refugees “due to the economic and security situation“.

In conclusion, the Permanent Representative reiterated that Italy “calls for the resumption of a political process under the auspices of the United Nations to realize the aspirations of the Syrian people and remains ready to fight all forms of impunity“, confirming full support “to the essential work of the Commission of Inquiry and of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism – IIIM”.
