During the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Italy, together with Lebanon, Slovenia and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), organised a side-event on the importance of women’s involvement in peace and security processes, in a global context marked by increasingly complex challenges, with the aim of promoting growing female participation in decision-making processes at all levels.
“On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the adoption of UN Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) on the Women, Peace and Security agenda, it is important to strengthen the role of women in conflict prevention and resolution and their participation in peacebuilding and peace-keeping processes,” stressed the Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Vincenzo Grassi.
“We are a candidate to become a member of the Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 mandate and we are firmly determined to continue to strengthen, in that capacity, the role of women mediators, also in line with General Recommendation 40 of the Committee of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW),” said the Ambassador.
Luca Fratini, MAECI Coordinator of the Women Peace and Security Agenda, highlighted Italy’s support for civil society organisations and its commitment to the organisation of training programmes on the issue, also recalling the forthcoming adoption of the Fifth National Action Plan.
The event was attended by representatives of Italian and Lebanese civil society, both among the speakers and in the audience, and by representatives of the CEDAW Committee, demonstrating Italy’s collaborative and inclusive approach.
