The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Vincenzo Grassi, took the floor today in the interactive dialogue with the International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic, in the framework of the 58th session of the Human Rights Council.
“Italy strongly supports the political transition in Syria, with a view to overcome the atrocities of the past, and to embark on a path towards justice and peace. We encourage a process that is Syrian-led and owned, that promotes the full realization of human rights for all Syrians”, stated the Permanent Representative. “We emphasize the need for an inclusive transition, regardless of gender, religion or ethnic background. Reconciliation remains essential to fulfill the aspirations of the Syrian people, including through a Constitution that guarantees equal rights and freedoms”. he continued.
Ambassador Grassi also confirmed that Italy recognizes the progresses made through the Constitutional Declaration, and encourages the transitional authorities to move forward on this positive direction, upholding the respect of International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law and protection of the civilian population: “Investigating the recent violence in Western Syria, in synergy with the relevant United Nations mechanisms, upholding the accountability and responsibility for the abuses and the sectarian violence, are crucial steps towards a lasting stability. Italy will continue to stand by the Syrian people along this arduous path, fostering the easing of sanctions and providing humanitarian assistance”, he concluded.
