The Permanent Representative of Italy at the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Vincenzo Grassi, delivered a statement today during the interactive dialogue with the Special on the situation of human rights in Myanmar at the 58th session of the Human Rights Council.

Italy strongly condemns the escalation of violence and serious human rights violations perpetrated by the junta since the 2021 coup d’état. We are deeply concerned by the widespread use of force against civilians, including airstrikes, torture, sexual and gender-based violence, as well as abuses on minorities, including the Rohingya”, stated the Permanent Representative.  The Ambassador added that “The severe humanitarian crisis in Myanmar demands urgent action. Italy is alarmed by the impact of the conflict and the blockade of aid into the country and especially in Rakhine State. We call for full, safe and unhindered access of humanitarian assistance to all people in need and stress the necessity for setting the conditions for a voluntary, dignified, and safe return of Rohingya refugees”.

The Permanent Representative further noted that “Italy remains concerned by the impunity for atrocities committed and urges accountability for alleged international crimes and human rights violations against the people f Myanmar. We strongly support the Independent Investigative Mechanism’s crucial work in this regard”.

Italy urges Myanmar military to cease all violence and engage in an inclusive dialogue to restore democratic transition prospects, including though credible elections with opposition participation”, he concluded, commending the efforts of the UN Special Envoy and the intensified regional initiatives, especially the ASEAN envoy.
