The Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Vincenzo Grassi, took the floor today during the Interactive Dialogue on Ukraine, in the framework of the 53rd session of the Human Rights Council.

The latest reports of the United Nations demonstrate once again that as a result of the full-scale, unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression by the Russian Federation, the human rights situation in Ukraine, including Crimea, seriously deteriorated, causing enormous suffering to the Ukrainian people, without sparing children and other innocent civilians”, stated the Permanent Representative. He added that Italy “supports and appreciates the work of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, that continues to play a crucial role to document and report the situation on the ground, drawing the attention of the international community to the need to ensure accountability for the grave violations of the international law, including summary executions, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, torture and ill-treatment, which must be immediately halted”.

In conclusion Ambassador Grassi affirmed that “a lasting peace cannot be achieved without justice and the full respect of Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and therefore Italy will continue to support Ukraine as long as necessary and remains fully engaged to counter the negative impacts of the war on the rest of the world, particularly on the most vulnerable people.
